Here’s a message on what to do with the last few weeks of summer.

FYI, while we’re at it, here’s a preview of what is to come: for the first 6-8 weeks of the school year, we will be working out during 6th period only.  In mid to late October we will start going about an hour after school after 6th period.  Five day a week practices will start the second week of November.  We will have a general team meeting the first day of 6th period.  Come ready to discuss your goals and how you will contribute to the team’s success this year.  We will start strength and conditioning testing the next day, so come ready the second day of school with workout gear, running shoes, and wrestling gear.  Bring those things every day. DO NOT simply show up in vans or street shoes.  If you fail to dress out, you will still be working out, though you might not like what is prescribed for you on that day.  Dress out no matter what, even if injured…unless you are in a full body cast, there are always things you can do.  If you have the sniffles, use wisdom: if it is simply a minor runny nose or headache, consider still working out, but if you are experiencing flu-like symptoms, stay away.  Do not use this as an excuse to miss practice when you just rather not.

Be prepared to shower EVERY DAY immediately after workout.  Do not wait until you go home.  Bring towel and soap.  Use both.  Re-dress in a clean pair of clothes.  Doing this will save both you and your teammates from much unwanted skin ickyness.  Do not neglect this…it will cost you.

Sophomores through seniors will be lifting each day and wrestling most days, though a select few wrestlers who need it will focus on wrestling more.  Freshmen, for the most part, will be focusing on basic wrestling skills, with a little time spent on preparing them for “hell week,” which will start Oct 31.  Basically, “hell week” is the team tryout for wrestling.  It will consist of three conditioning workouts, one to be completed on Monday, one on Tuesday, the third on Thursday.  How do you make it onto the team?  Simple: complete the workouts without cheating or quitting, and show up the following Monday to practice.  There is no performance/time limit etc.  Just survive, finish, and then come back for more on Monday.  The try outs are meant not to select the athletically gifted, but simply to weed out those with the improper attitude.  Bottom line: wrestling is tough–if you are flaky or mentally weak, you will quit before the season is out, so might as well find that out before you jump in.  If you miss hell week due to illness or whatnot, you will perform it when you return.  It is mandatory.  Football players will do the workouts when they come out for the team after football season.

Sophomores through seniors will be coaching, cheering, encouraging, and scoring the workouts for the frehsmen (ie, they will be making sure everyone does the workout correctly).  You guys have a role to play in this….we are not a cackle of individuals but a united team, and we each need to be looking out for each other’s interests.  Upper classmen, you must take that seriously and act as such during hell week…and the whole season.

Come ready to work hard and meet your goals…day one.  We cannot waste time.
