A Bittersweet Tribute

Tuesday night Capo defeated Mission Viejo 46-15 on the last home dual meet of the season.

Every year, the last home dual is bittersweet because it is senior night, where we honor our seniors.  On the one hand, we get to celebrate some mighty fine gentlemen, but on the other hand, this is done with the knowledge that they will soon leave Capo.  They will move on to bigger and better things, but they will be missed.

seniors: Wesley Wong, Ryan Tye, Russell Fitzpatrick, Kyle Coley, Victor Mendoza, Ryan Knecht. Front: Juan Hernandez, Christian Hauser, Jericho Uribe, Coach Bordner, Andrew Peel, Shane Johnston

This year’s class is a special one indeed.  Every single one of these guys is unique and has contributed to our team.  For many, they have left marks on CV wrestling that will last a long time…and that’s a good thing.

It has been a fun ride, gentlemen.  You have enriched the lives of many at Capo and have left quite a mark.  Congratulations for staying the course.  That is quite the achievement: few try wrestling, many fewer still complete the task.  As one of my former coaches once said, “wrestling will take the little boy right out of you.”  Staying the course matures you.  It is easy to start out enthusiastic, easy to walk away, but much more difficult–and deep and meaningful–to keep going as long as you have.  This experience will stay with your for the rest of your life, and in the near and distant future you will get to look back upon this time with pride (the good kind of pride!).

That has forged habits in you that will serve you well throughout the rest of your lives, in your college studies, careers, marriages, and in your lives as parents.  There will come a time when life will call upon the skills you’ve learned during your time here.  For you, since you have built the habit of persevearance, life will go much better for you in those difficult times.

I am proud of you.  Your team is proud of you.  Your parents are proud of you, and the fans are proud of you.   Well done, men.
