Capo had a fun post season in 2015.  We kicked off the road to state at conference/league finals, where 7 out of 11 Capo wrestlers placed in the CVAA conference, qualifying for CIF: Andres Gonzalez, Brandon Hernandez, Nico Lizardi, Joe Curry, Michael Youssef, Gerardo Hernandez, and Corey Shackleford.  Gonzalez, Brandon Hernandez, Curry, Youssef, and Gerardo Hernandez won league titles.  Brandon also won a conference title (for the CVAA, the South Coast League and Sea View League combined to form the conference.  The league champions at each weight met in the conference finals to determine the conference champ.).

CIF at Ayala High School was the next step.  Shackleford and Gonzalez earned a 2-2 record, while Lizardi went 3-2.  Brandon Hernandez was crowned CIF champion, going unscored upon in the whole tournament.  His title is the second in 2 years for Capo, following on Phillip O’shea’s CIF title in 2014.  The story of the tournament was freshman Gerardo Hernandez, who finished second.  Entering the tournament unseeded, he defeated the #5, #4, and #1 seed on the way to the finals.  He is the first freshman in Capo wrestling history to place in the CIF tournament.

Both Gerardo and Brandon qualified for the Southern Section Master’s tournament in Ontario the following week.  Gerardo went 1-2, while Brandon made it to the quarterfinals before dropping three losses and being eliminated from the tournament.  Brandon’s losses were to the #1, #3, and #6 ranked wrestlers in the 250+ school Southern Section.  He came one win away from qualifying for state.  Though it wasn’t the result he wanted, he fought valiantly through trial and injury (separated shoulder AC joint and a sprained LCL in his knee), and the result will fuel the fire for his senior campaign.
