What a year it has been for CV wrestling!

Both Juan Hernandez and Christian Hauser qualified for the state tournament in dramatic fashion (see highlights below), and both went 2-2 at the state tournament. This puts them in the top 20 of the whole state of California in their respective weightclasses.

Last Thursday night we celebrated not only that achievement, but the achievements of the whole team. This team is special, and that made it a magical night. For instance, we gave out 13 awards, which is over double the amount we gave out last year. Here’s the breakdown:

“Unbroken” award: Ian Brault and Stephen Perez

Aggression: Kyle Coley

Coaches awards: Victor Mendoza and Russell Fitzpatrick

Most Dedicated: Mike Davis

Offseason dedication: Shane Johnston

Most Improved: Geoff Mellor

Courageous Cougar: Donovan Wilhelm

FS MVP: Nico Lizardi

JV MVP: Jose Sarabia

Lower Weight Varsity MVP: Christian Hauser

Upper Weight Varsity MVP: Juan Hernandez

In addition, the following cougars earned scholar athlete awards (over 3.75 GPA):

Russell Fitzpatrick, Kyle Coley, Ryan Tye, Mike Davis, Ryan Knecht, Wesley Wong, Shane Johnston, Mike Logan.

Great job to all those named, as well as all those wrestlers who are working hard without much recognition.

6 league champions, 6 CIF medalists, 2 state qualifiers, 7th in Orange County, 3rd in South Coast League, 1st at Edison Beach Bash…the list of accomplishments goes on.  This has been a one of a kind year.  Lets be sure to keep the momentum going, folks.  We can soar to greater heights in the coming years, so lets not be satisfied with this!

Here are our highlights (talk it up on Facebook and comment on youtube please!):

This is a time of celebration for your son’s hard work.  Making it through a season of the toughest sport on earth is an accomplishment.  Something positive about each wrestler will be said, we will honor the seniors and captains, give out awards, and watch our highlight DVD  and slide show made by Coach Bordner and Spencer Shahidzadeh (each wrestler will get one for free).  We hope to see you there.

PS: please also get your payments for your SCWAY cards to coach B. as well.  $17.50, made out to CVHS Wrestling Booster.  This card insures you for the spring, and allows you to wrestle in spring tournaments.  This card is mandatory for anyone in the wrestling room in the spring.  By the way, this is roughly half the cost of the USA cards from last year.
