We have been hard at it with several competitions so far in 2015. Here are some results:

  1.  San Clemente Dual Meet Tournament, Dec 1: Capo brought a partial varsity lineup, and wen 1-2, losing to San Clemente and Paloma Valley, while defeating Huntington Beach. Gonzalez, Brandon Hernandez, Arturo Mendoza and Gerardo Hernandez went undefeated.
  2. Corona Del Mar Dual Meet Tournament: Capo went 5-0 undefeated with its full lineup at this tournament, defeating Costa Mesa, Van Nuys, Paramount, Gahr, and Coachella Valley on the way to first place. Gonzalez, B. Hernandez, Richard Arriaga, G.Hernandez, Shackleford, and Randy Arriaga all won medals for Capo.  Randy Arriaga, a freshman, went 4-1 on the day at heavyweight….pretty good for a freshman heavyweight!

3. Duals:

  • Capo Vs Corona Del Mar: 51-22 win
  • Capo Vs Cypress: 51-18 loss
  • Capo Vs. Newport Harbor (home, alumni dual): 48-24 win

4. Mann Classic: Capo brought 7 of 14 to the very tough Mann Classic. Gonzalez finished 6th while Brandon Hernandez finished fourth. De La Torre and Youssef made day 2 . Hernandez’s weightclass had 1 state placer, 3 other state qualifiers, and 9 other CIF placers for a total of 13 wrestlers who medaled at CIF, Master’s, or state last year.

5. Frosh/soph and JV teams. In addition to the duals above, the f/s and jv teams have competed at the San Clemente frosh duals, San Clemente FS duals, San Clemente JV duals, and the Big Kat Tournament. At the freshman duals, Capo defeated both Laguna Hills and Trabuco Hills, and at the Big Kat Tournament, Zach Reed, Randy Arriaga and Noah Holmes all medaled for Capo.

The varsity competed at the 50 team So Cal Challenge on Jan 3-4.  Mike Davis placed seventh, while Phillip O’shea finished in second:

While Phillip dropped a tough 3-1 decision in the finals, this is not the last time he’ll face the Woodbridge wrestler.  He will have a chance for revenge, and knowing Phillip, this will focus him and he’ll come back firing on all 8 cylinders.

Geoff Mellor and Corey Shackelford both performed well too, making it to the “blood round” before dropping.  Along the way, Geoff defeated the ultimate 3rd place finisher from Trabuco Hills.

A few jv wrestlers got some good experience.  Even in the losses, we are seeing improvement and guys are taking steps forward.

We are back in action tonight vs Laguna Hills, #2 in Orange County.  Phillip has the chance to edge closer to Mike Phillips’ career pin record, which has stood since 1988.  Saturday a select squad of varsity wrestlers will compete at Esperanza, while the jv and fs teams are at the San Clemente Rotary tournament.

The Capo Wrestling Team has rolled through December, with our own tournament at Capo, a dual meet with Newport Harbor, and the 50 team Mann Classic Varsity tournament.  Here are some results:

*Capo JV/FS tournament: Juan Pedraza finished first, while Marshall Ferraro, Michael Souri, Juan De La Torre, and Marshall Ferraro finished third.

*Capo wrestled Newport Harbor for the alumni dual on Dec 18, and the FS and Varsity teams came away with a win.  FS won 37-27, while varsity won 41-29.  The varsity jumped out to a 28-0 lead, thanks to pins from Noah Husband, Juan Pedraza, and Michael Davis, and a major decision win from Joey Ahmadzai, before Newport Harbor came storming back. Corey Shackleford got Capo back on track with his exciting 1-0 win, and Phillip O’shea closed out the night with a pin at 220.  It was a great night, with many of our alums watching the battle.  For all the alums that came out to watch, thank you!

Here are some highlights from the dual:

On Friday and Saturday, the varsity competed in the 50 team Mann Classic.  Capo finished 12th as a team and had four medalists: Brandon Hernandez finished 7th at 120 lbs, Geoff Mellor 5th at 145, Corey Shackleford 8th at 182, and Phillip O’shea 1st at 195.  Phillip pinned his way to the finals, then defeated Woodbridge’s Emu Anaim in an intense 5-2 battle.  Phillip’s performance earned him the OC Register Wrestler of the Week honors.

In addition, Michael Davis received a shout out from the Register too.  Capo is in the news!

One of the awards we give out during the year is the “Courageous Cougar” award.  This award is given out weekly or bi-weekly to a non-varsity wrestler who is working hard, showing up with a great attitude, and contributing a lot to the team.  We emphasize that it is specifically for a non-varsity wrestler, as the varsity wrestlers typically get the lion’s share of the public attention.

We have this award so that the non-varsity guys get a sense of accomplishment too and know that they are contributing to the team.

Our first Courageous Cougar award went out this week to Kian Badie.  Kian is a jr in our program and really shows up to work every day.  He runs hard, lifts hard, wrestles hard, and has a great attitude in practice.  Keep it up, Kian!

In other news, we had our first scrimmage of the season this Saturday.  Had 25 Capo wrestlers in attendance, plus 20 wrestlers from three other schools.  A great afternoon of hard wrestling and fun.

This has become a tradition of sorts for us.  Here are some of the pictures from Saturday’s back-to-school potluck and kickball game at Hidden Hills Park.  There wasn’t much kickball going on, but there was a loooot of monkeying around by the usual suspects:

First match of the season is under our belts. We tied El Toro 36-36 in a hard fought battle. Started off strong but ET fought back. Props go to Jose Sarabia, Geoff Mellor, John Badger, Mike Logan, and Phillip O’Shea for pinning their opponents. Aaron Geria got his first Varsity win!

Aaron Geria

Congratulations to Aaron Geria on his first Varsity win! Way to hang in there!!

This week’s Courageous Cougars are: Michael Ekizian and Nico Lizardi.  Michael stepped in with just a week under his belt and went 3-0 on JV and 2-1 on Varsity.  He’s a gamer. Nico beat everybody up on JV, going 7-0. Tore through the competition. The CC award is given every week or so to a non-starter who is really working hard and showing character. Keep up the good work, guys!!
