Awesome job to the following 4.0 students for fall semester:

Ian Brault

Mike Davis

Mike Logan

Logan Farrand

Jake Peets

Mike Logan’s 4.0 is especially notable, as it is the THIRD 4.0 semester he has had in a row.

Great job fellas!  These guys all have displayed the disciplined habits that make for a successful life.  We are proud of you!  Varsity lettermen who obtained a 4.0 have had their name and GPA put on our “Scholar athlete” board.

Ian Brault earned a 4.0 GPA for fall semester.

First match of the season is under our belts. We tied El Toro 36-36 in a hard fought battle. Started off strong but ET fought back. Props go to Jose Sarabia, Geoff Mellor, John Badger, Mike Logan, and Phillip O’Shea for pinning their opponents. Aaron Geria got his first Varsity win!

Aaron Geria

Congratulations to Aaron Geria on his first Varsity win! Way to hang in there!!

We ended the week with our first tournaments of the season. Congratulations are in order for several standout performances. On Varsity, Michael Logan went 7-0 to take first in his weight class and Michael Davis (6-1) and Joey Ahmadzai (5-2) both finished in second place at their respective weights. For JV, Nico Lizardi and Landon Hume both finished in first.  Lizardi went 7-0. Our freshman team got their first taste of competition and took home quite a few individual medals while the team finished in 5th place. This was good prep for getting the guys ready to begin league meets this coming week.

Congratulations to the following Cougar wrestlers for being our scholar athletes (from the left in the picture):

These guys have a 3.5 cumulative GPA or above…good job guys!

A HUGE congratulations goes out to five CV wrestlers for getting PERFECT ATTENDANCE for spring semester: Geoff Mellor, Ian Brault, Michael Logan, Aaron Geria, and Jake Peets.  These fellas were here every minute of every spring practice from March to June 8.

As a reward, they get perfect attendance trophies this week.  Awesome job, fellas, keep up the good work!

In other news, the following wrestlers have amassed 80 merit points in spring and have thus earned their way onto the 2012-13 promotional poster: Ian Brault, Phillip O’shea, Michael Davis, Jason Garcia, Jonny Gutierrez, Michael Logan, and Jake Peets.  They have earned their way onto the poster through wrestling in spring tournaments and scrimmages, going to club practices, having 90% or greater attendance at spring practices, and having a 3.75 GPA or above for spring.  There are plenty more opportunities to earn points in the summer!

The Capistrano Valley Cougars qualified nine wrestlers to the CIF tournament in two weeks, and crowned six champions in the process at the South Coast League Finals on Saturday.

The feat is extraordinary due to the league’s reputation, with the #2, #3, and #8 teams in the county, as well as Trabuco Hills, which was honorable mention at one point in the season.

With only the top three wrestlers at each weight moving onto CIF, the competition was mighty stiff.  All three qualifiers at some weights have good chances of medaling at CIF!

Though the team finished third in the team standings (only three points behind San Clemente) Capo’s six champions was the second-highest total in the league:  Laguna Hills had seven champions, while San Clemente had one.  The other teams had no champions.

Winning titles for CV were: Christian Hauser (115), Kyle Coley (128), Phillip O’shea (172), Russell Fitzpatrick (184), Juan Hernandez (197), and Victor Mendoza (222). Also qualifying for CIF were: Mike Davis (2nd at 108), Geoff Mellor (3rd at 140), and Michael Logan (3rd at 147).  Coley, Davis, and Mellor all pulled off huge upsets on the day, avenging losses from earlier in the year.  Mellor’s was especially notable, for he destroyed–then pinned–a wrestler who had pinned him twice earlier in the season.

We really can’t choose one “tough guy of the week” for this one, so we have FOUR: Coley, Davis, Mellor, and Logan.  You guys rose to the occasion and wrestled a stellar meet.  All four of you have come far in your respective careers so far.

In addition, give a huge pat on the back to seniors Shane Johnston, Ryan Tye, and Jericho Uribe, and Junior Donovan Wilhelm.  We are looking forward to Donovan’s return next year, but the aforementioned seniors put on the CV singlet for the last time Saturday, wrestling with heart and soul.  Ryan in particular impressed multiple opposing coaches with his sportsmanship.  It has been a pleasure coaching you guys, and you will be missed.  Dono, you’re a beast, and with a hard off season’s work, you’re gonna make some waves next year.
